Politicians and Celebrities that Wear Khadi

The unassuming khadi has lived in the shadows for far too long and it is only now that the fabric is gaining worldwide recognition. With the government pushing for several initiatives for its promotion and fashion designers too doing their parts bringing in modern innovations, the popularity of khadi is definitely on the rise.

So while many are still getting first introductions to this historic fabric, these well-known personalities have already made it their own:

The Prime Minister of India is as well known for his impeccable dressing sense as he is for his grand oratorical skills. Narendra Modi is especially fond of khadi and has on several occasions urged the people to have at least one piece of khadi clothing in their wardrobe. Reflecting upon how Mahatma Gandhi propagated khadi as a form of swadeshi movement, Narendra Modi encourages everyone to buy khadi in order to support the poor.

The Man Booker Prize winner who was listed as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world is a champion of ethnic Indian fashion. Simple but always classy, Roy is most often spotted in brands like péro that are known for employing indigenous textiles and traditional handcraft in their collection.

While the Friends star almost started a whole movement with her ‘Rachel Haircut’, Aniston has also always been one of the most well dressed celebrity in Hollywood. Although she’s never been photographed in a khadi outfit, Aniston is said to be a loyal client of designer Christina Kim who stocks a sweeping range of khadi-wear in her store Dosa in Los Angeles.

The Bollywood actor and the international face of L’Oreal has awed us with every single one of her statement making outfits. Whether its walking the red carpet at Cannes or chilling on the streets of Mumbai, Sonam never stops to turn heads. Sonia Gandhi’s handloom sarees are as famous as her political career. When it comes to fashion sense, she has well and truly followed in the footsteps of her mother-in-law and the only female Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. In a speech at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in Rae Bareli Sonia Gandhi even called on the students of to take inspiration from the rich and unparalleled heritage of Indian fashion in their designs.

The most famous of all Bollywood stars, Amitabh Bachchan, seems to become classier with age. He is often seen wearing khadi kurtas and waistcoats and was roped in by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission as its brand ambassador. The actor reportedly took on the job for free without demanding a hefty price that most brand endorsements call for.
